Creative Industries Interview – Marcus Alexander

Marcus Alexander is a Swedish musician and songwriter operating mainly on YouTube, Spotify and Twitch. To date he has recorded 12 original pieces available to the public and 17 covers.

1. What are some of the challenges you face as a songwriter?

I’d say finding the “zen” of writing modes, sometimes you can write easily but you don’t like it at all, or you write something you really really like but you can’t match it or develop it.. So writing at the right moment and also realizing when that moment is, is precious information haha..

2. What motivated you to publish your music?

Simply the fact that I wrote many songs and that I studied studio stuff so it was easy to publish it, but of course also the fact that I want to share my music and words and melodies, that’s the whole point of why I play, because I want to give people that feeling I get myself when I hear someone else’s music and depth!

3. How has technology benefited your work?

The internet is key to my “success” or whatever you could call it.. I stream live at which pretty much created the fanbase upon which I built my artist profile and following, also being able to record at home and master/mix everything makes life easier and also distribution cheap.

4. When did your passion for music begin?

My whole family including most of my cousins play music or sing, or at least create something, like painting or architecture! I started playing piano when I was like 5 because we had one, and then guitar when I was around 14 because my cousin told me I should try.. and then I just wanted to get good so I practiced for hours and hours!

5. What inspires you the most?

Inspiration is hard to pin point for me, sometimes I write at my best when I’m hung over …, but sometimes it’s just from sitting around quietly for a long time and just thinking. I gotta say girls messing up my life has been the biggest source of inspiration but I guess that’s just the way things are, if I cared about society I suppose I’d be a rapper complaining about taxes and guns and crap.. haha I honestly have no idea, Gregory Alan Isakov said something smart, living life is like eating all the poetry you find along the way, and then songwriters are just good at dumping that eaten poetry into lyrics or music.

The average salary for a Film / Video Editor is AU$53,097 per year. (Anonymous. 2016). This varies depending on experience and exact location.

Describe the difference between linear and non-linear editing.

Linear editing is editing in a sequential order – start to finish, it was particularly used in the earlier years of editing when tape could only be edited limitedly. It tends to be a cheaper and in some cases easier than non-linear editing.

Non-linear editing is editing out of the pre-determined order. Instead of working piece by piece the editor can switch between working on different segments. Although it is a less simple technique it is usually preferred as it allows the editing process to be more flexible.

Social Media, Twitter – Blog 1

What are the features of this new media technology?

Twitter is the third most popular social media website in the world (after Facebook and YouTube). Twitter allows its users to create a personal page that defines their existence as a member of the ‘twitter-sphere’. It allows people to create small 140 character messages (tweets) which can be made to inform, entertain or spam their followers. On top of that users receive updates from people that they have followed, this lets them keep up to date on topics of interest and communicate with role models, public figures or friends and family. To add to messages users can post digital content like videos and photos and can also ‘retweet’ content they like so followers can see it.

allow people to update and inform them of trends. Companies use it to keep in touch with consumers and famous people generally gain a large following and can communicate with fans.  Connect people who share common interests.

How does it change the way we communicate and interact?

Twitter can provide people with an easy way to communicate with followers from around the globe in short concise messages. From general updates (such as day to day life) to celebrities and internet personalities keeping in touch with fans and promoting their art. By gaining a following of people who share common interests a user can cater to an audience using their digital content and can even talk (to an extent) to these people.

What does it mean for consumers? Does it change our experience of the media?

Twitter is constantly changes industry by allowing consumers to contact a company/corporation directly. Consumers can have more interactivity with role models, artists and actors, plus keep up to date with trending topics. In this way it can also give the people a voice, a way to speak out and make a change.

Believe it or not most of our current popular culture is adopted through social media sites such as twitter. Most likely you’ve seen memes trending and shared them with your friends, your friends show their friends, their friends show their friends and the cycle continues. This is why digital content on social media gets so popular, because its easy to share.

Highly influential on self esteem and interests.

What social and economical changes will it cause?

Twitter constantly changes industry, two of the biggest industries it has an impact on is beauty and fashion. Companies always have an ear out for trends and things such as #thedress are perfect opportunities for profit.

Trending and hot topics blow up through Twitter, this causes changes even subtly it can change our day to day life. Just like #MakeTrumpDrumphAgain topics can be used as a form of activism and protest.

What problems and possibilities will this form of new media technology bring about?

As mentioned above Twitter can be a starting place for protest and activism groups. Even Anonymous (a famous hactivism group) uses Twitter to reach out to people! This does have repercussions as supporters of ISIS have also found a way to utilize twitter for there benefits.

Another issue is bullying and trolling, Twitter can be used to anonymously attack people through their accounts. A quick search on Google and you’ll find that this happens on a regular basis. In some cases it’s quite brutal and celebrity beef can be a cause of it. As you probably know Taylor Swift accused Kanye West of using an offensive lyric (involving her) and several arguments and Buzzfeed articles later #TaylorSwiftIsOverWasTrending. This was no surprise but during that time both Taylor and Kanye’s (and a number of other peoples) pages were flooded with insults and racist slurs. It was quite disturbing and brutal.

Kids, please play nice with Twitter. 🙂

Drama Reflection

What was your role on the production?
For our media project ‘Come As You Are’ I was the producer. For some parts of the production our group had to share roles (such as camera operator and sound recordist) but the Producer and Director role was a constant.

What aspects were most successful?

I really liked the video logs, I think they were a really creative idea. To me they always seemed like a cool way to tell a story and they can push a story-line along well without breaking the overall mood.

What aspects need to be taken into account for your next project?

I think as a producer I needed to get the paperwork done faster and make sure everyone was organised, we all got a bit distracted and all over the place. Also the acting ability of our team, some of the acting during fight scenes were laughable and we should have changed the scene to better fit the actors.

Where did you demonstrate the following editing techniques? (Match on action, cut away, sound bridge, dialogue overlap).

During our production we didn’t have a dialogue overlap (because it was mostly narration) but we managed to sneak a sound bridge in at the beginning with the music. The project was full of cutaways (fight scenes, arguing scenes, etc). Match on action was used during the cut away where the mother and father are discussing the case file, during the process of handing the case over a match on action was pulled off.
