Drama Reflection

What was your role on the production?
For our media project ‘Come As You Are’ I was the producer. For some parts of the production our group had to share roles (such as camera operator and sound recordist) but the Producer and Director role was a constant.

What aspects were most successful?

I really liked the video logs, I think they were a really creative idea. To me they always seemed like a cool way to tell a story and they can push a story-line along well without breaking the overall mood.

What aspects need to be taken into account for your next project?

I think as a producer I needed to get the paperwork done faster and make sure everyone was organised, we all got a bit distracted and all over the place. Also the acting ability of our team, some of the acting during fight scenes were laughable and we should have changed the scene to better fit the actors.

Where did you demonstrate the following editing techniques? (Match on action, cut away, sound bridge, dialogue overlap).

During our production we didn’t have a dialogue overlap (because it was mostly narration) but we managed to sneak a sound bridge in at the beginning with the music. The project was full of cutaways (fight scenes, arguing scenes, etc). Match on action was used during the cut away where the mother and father are discussing the case file, during the process of handing the case over a match on action was pulled off.

Censorship In The Media

What is censorship in the media?

Censorship is altering or cutting out parts of media forms in order to avoid offensive or questionable content being released to the public eye.

Censorship can be used in both society and in art forms. For example, censorship in society would include taking away peoples freedom of speech. In art forms the government can take down offensive material.

In some ways the media can be censored for specific groups based on factors such as age. This would be the G PG M MA R X ratings.

What media forms are censored?

A number of media forms can be censored such as:

  • The News – Broadcasts can be changed in order to prevent panic among the population or to protect national security. To avoid controversy or trouble.
  • Art forms and entertainment  – This can be censored to prevent obscenity, hate speech and  slander. Censorship can be to protect vulnerable groups such as children. Art forms include video games, music, colours, words, photos, websites, etc.

How does the Australian government censor the Australian media?

The government can censor the media by making laws that prevent certain content from being shown, they can also restrict who views content. Whitewashing is used in educational material and is the removal of conflicting events from history books. The government can ban/remove anything considered offensive or controversial by demanding that the creator remove it or taking it to a higher authority to have it removed.

Should censorship occur in Australia?

In some instances censorship is needed, especially concerning children ( exposure to violence or sexual content). But there is way to much censorship happening, the general public has a right to remove anything they find offensive, this is fine by itself. But the government is censoring controversial issues that the public has a right to know about. This dampens the public’s ability to make a decision based on facts. Censorship is fine unless it involves something the people should know, especially in the case of foreign affairs and current events.

Media Issues – Hacking

What is the issue?

In a digital world people’s cyber security has never been more important. The amount of important data and content on the internet exceeds thousands of gigabytes. This information can be compromised by hacking. Hacking is the access of restricted/secured data (often illegally).

Who does it affect?

Hacking can potentially affect everyone and chances are you have experienced some form of it as well. Companies, websites and users with poor internet security experience hacking often. Even people with strong security can experience breaches from experienced hackers.

Case Study

In 2015 after two years of preparations Russian hackers transferred over 650 million pounds into dummy accounts. They used official looking emails infected with malware to collect data. Once they were ready they used the  information to impersonate bank staff of over one hundred financial institutions. A Kaspersky Lab (Russian Cyber Security) uncovered the operation after investigating an ATM that was distributing cash randomly. The banks were soon informed and a large investigation was started.

Solutions

In order to prevent hacking there are several steps that can be taken these include changing passwords often, updating antivirus software and backing up important data. More info here: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/security-abuse/how-can-i-prevent-hacking

Personal Development

What aspect of production would I like to improve on?

I want to improve on the paperwork in the pre-production, there was so much of it and I didn’t manage/organise it very well. Also with the filming I should have focused on keeping people on task because we often found ourselves side tracked by something as small as a cool bird (not that I regret it, I love birds).

Collaborative Team – Rise Against

Name: Rise Against  (Tim McIlrath, Zach Blair, Joe Principe and Brandon Barnes).

Bio

Rise Against is a band formed in 1999, in Chicago Illinois. The band is known to crate songs based on their ideals and use them as a form of activism. The band openly supports human rights and have based several songs around the violation of human rights. Most members of the band (excluding Barnes) are straight edge. Rise Against also recently endorsed a new line of Vans shoes.

Profession

Rise against is a melodic hardcore band. They make music. They protest stuff. Usually bad stuff. Yes that is what Rise Against is. This is how I waste space to make it look like I actually tried. Truth is I’m clueless. But HEY, you know what Rise Against is and what they do and that is what was asked.

They signed with the label ‘Fat Wreck Chords’ and released their first two albums The Unraveling (2001) and Revolutions Per Minute (2003). Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004) bought the band mainstream success and several popular singles. The albums The Sufferer and The Witness (2006) and Appeal to Reason (2008) hit the charts at number 10 and number 3. Rise Against has also shown support for organisations such as Amnesty International and the It Gets Better Project by starting fundraisers and donating money.

Innovation

Rise Against uses their music as a form of activism especially concerning human rights. They have featured confronting footage in their videos “…To show the people what they should be fighting for” (Tim McIlrath).

Project 1 Pitch

The story is a crime-drama about a young girl, who recounts the story of her parents’ and the months leading up to their demise. After a heated argument, Alice kills Jack’s brother, Brendon. Later that week, Jack and Alice are assigned Brendon’s murder case. Jack is still unaware that Alice had actually murdered Brendon. As the story goes along, Jack becomes increasingly determined to find out who murdered Brendon, and Alice’s personality reveals itself to Jack. As they both argue all day, they begin to neglect Ava, their child. In our climax, Alice reveals that she had killed Brendon. In the heat of the moment, Jack strangles Alice, killing her. Ava walks in just as her mother dies, so Jack runs away. Several days later, Jack’s body is found after a probable-suicide, and Ava is shipped off to a distant relative. After years of struggling to come to terms with what happened, Ava decides to take her therapist’s advice and recount her parents’ story.

I love the idea of using video logs to indirectly address the audience, it can fill in plot holes without breaking the fourth wall.

(could not upload it?)

I like the idea of the glass smashing, incorporating this into a film could have an awesome effect.
