Censorship In The Media

What is censorship in the media?

Censorship is altering or cutting out parts of media forms in order to avoid offensive or questionable content being released to the public eye.

Censorship can be used in both society and in art forms. For example, censorship in society would include taking away peoples freedom of speech. In art forms the government can take down offensive material.

In some ways the media can be censored for specific groups based on factors such as age. This would be the G PG M MA R X ratings.

What media forms are censored?

A number of media forms can be censored such as:

  • The News – Broadcasts can be changed in order to prevent panic among the population or to protect national security. To avoid controversy or trouble.
  • Art forms and entertainment  – This can be censored to prevent obscenity, hate speech and  slander. Censorship can be to protect vulnerable groups such as children. Art forms include video games, music, colours, words, photos, websites, etc.

How does the Australian government censor the Australian media?

The government can censor the media by making laws that prevent certain content from being shown, they can also restrict who views content. Whitewashing is used in educational material and is the removal of conflicting events from history books. The government can ban/remove anything considered offensive or controversial by demanding that the creator remove it or taking it to a higher authority to have it removed.

Should censorship occur in Australia?

In some instances censorship is needed, especially concerning children ( exposure to violence or sexual content). But there is way to much censorship happening, the general public has a right to remove anything they find offensive, this is fine by itself. But the government is censoring controversial issues that the public has a right to know about. This dampens the public’s ability to make a decision based on facts. Censorship is fine unless it involves something the people should know, especially in the case of foreign affairs and current events.

Media Issues – Hacking

What is the issue?

In a digital world people’s cyber security has never been more important. The amount of important data and content on the internet exceeds thousands of gigabytes. This information can be compromised by hacking. Hacking is the access of restricted/secured data (often illegally).

Who does it affect?

Hacking can potentially affect everyone and chances are you have experienced some form of it as well. Companies, websites and users with poor internet security experience hacking often. Even people with strong security can experience breaches from experienced hackers.

Case Study

In 2015 after two years of preparations Russian hackers transferred over 650 million pounds into dummy accounts. They used official looking emails infected with malware to collect data. Once they were ready they used the  information to impersonate bank staff of over one hundred financial institutions. A Kaspersky Lab (Russian Cyber Security) uncovered the operation after investigating an ATM that was distributing cash randomly. The banks were soon informed and a large investigation was started.

In order to prevent hacking there are several steps that can be taken these include changing passwords often, updating antivirus software and backing up important data. More info here: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/security-abuse/how-can-i-prevent-hacking

Personal Development

What aspect of production would I like to improve on?

I want to improve on the paperwork in the pre-production, there was so much of it and I didn’t manage/organise it very well. Also with the filming I should have focused on keeping people on task because we often found ourselves side tracked by something as small as a cool bird (not that I regret it, I love birds).

Collaborative Team – Rise Against

Name: Rise Against  (Tim McIlrath, Zach Blair, Joe Principe and Brandon Barnes).

Rise Against is a band formed in 1999, in Chicago Illinois. The band is known to crate songs based on their ideals and use them as a form of activism. The band openly supports human rights and have based several songs around the violation of human rights. Most members of the band (excluding Barnes) are straight edge. Rise Against also recently endorsed a new line of Vans shoes.

Rise against is a melodic hardcore band. They make music. They protest stuff. Usually bad stuff. Yes that is what Rise Against is. This is how I waste space to make it look like I actually tried. Truth is I’m clueless. But HEY, you know what Rise Against is and what they do and that is what was asked.

They signed with the label ‘Fat Wreck Chords’ and released their first two albums The Unraveling (2001) and Revolutions Per Minute (2003). Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004) bought the band mainstream success and several popular singles. The albums The Sufferer and The Witness (2006) and Appeal to Reason (2008) hit the charts at number 10 and number 3. Rise Against has also shown support for organisations such as Amnesty International and the It Gets Better Project by starting fundraisers and donating money.

Rise Against uses their music as a form of activism especially concerning human rights. They have featured confronting footage in their videos “…To show the people what they should be fighting for” (Tim McIlrath).

Rape Culture

We’ve all heard people throw around words like victim blaming and sexual objectification right? Sometimes people use words like ‘rape’ and ‘molest’ in a joking manner or to exaggerate something harmless for fun. The thing is, should we treat something so serious as little more than a joke?

It’s called trivializing rape, it happens a lot more often than people like to admit. Trivializing rape is apart of ‘rape culture’ which is an attitude that society has tak
en towards rape and sexual harassment. Its referring to the way our society blames victims of sexual assault and normalizes sexual violence.  Although this may seem extreme, you’ll find that as you read headlines or articles (much like this one) rape culture is everywhere.

Its people telling the victim that ‘perhaps you should have been more careful’ or ‘maybe you shouldn’t have worn that dress’ instead of punishing the culprit. Because its easier that way, isn’t it?

Here’s some statistics from the USA:

  • 105,000 rapes occur per year in the United States and the number increases each year.
  • Only 1 in 100 rapists serve more than one year in prison.
  • 80% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 30.
  • 1 in every 10 rape victims are male.
  • 1 in 33 men experience attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.

Rape Culture In the Media119

With 105,ooo rapes occurring per year in the USA alone, why is there only limited coverage. Simple, its not considered ‘good’ news. In the off chance the media does do a story on sexual assault they focus on the rapist o
r in one case how promising their football career was!

The Real Enemy

Not every male walking down the street is a rapist, abuser,d58e90ad3b11e4105a2043e81c08137d sexual offender, etc. Men aren’t the enemy, neither is alcohol, skimpy
outfits or the way people act. Honestly men get raped as well and it is possible for guys to be raped by women. This isn’t a matter of feminism or gender supremacy. It’s a matter of rape and how we treat the victims. Victim blaming happens everywhere not just in rape culture, victim blaming occurs in suicides,
petty crimes and sometimes even homicides.

Its upsetting to think that when another person is sexually assaulted a majority of people (especially the online community) will immediately blame the victim for being ‘too drunk’ or ‘for wearing skimpy clothing’. Its an important time to teach people ‘don’t rape’ rather than ‘don’t get raped’.

“Rape culture is when I was six, and my brother punched my two front teeth out. Instead of reprimanding him, my mother said “Stefanie, what did you do to provoke him?” When my only defense was my mother whispering in my ear, “Honey, ignore him. Don’t rile him up. He just wants a reaction.” As if it was my sole purpose, the reason six-year-old me existed, was to not rile up my brother. It’s starts when we’re six, and ends when we grow up assuming the natural state of a man is a predator, and I must walk on eggshells, as to not “rile him up.” Right, mom?” (Stephanie Lyn, Cover Your Eyes).

Make ‘Merica Great Again!

“Will America ever be great with Donald Trump hanging around? Answer? Hell no.”

Ah America land of the free, home of the brave, obnoxious older brother of Canada, denying the existence of New Jersey, it truly is the land of opportunity. Except if you’re Muslim, Jewish, African American or any kind of unique individual. Or at least that’s  Donald Trump’s way of thinking. When he’s not making a fool of himself he is desperately trying to make himself look competent by insulting other people. But can we blame the guy? He had a hard life, he grew up in Brooklyn, his father gave him a ‘small loan of a million dollars’ (well done NOT relating to the working class BTW).

Oh, but who is Trump? WELL currently Donald Trump is a US presidential candidate for the republicans, proud owner of Trump Tower, Trump Taj Mahal (a casino) and The Trump Organisation. I think he names all these assets after himself to boost his ego. Trump is “Pro life” and “Against gun control”. He announced that he would “make America great again” by imposing taxes on imported products and says he can stop refugees by telling them “You can’t come here”. The icing on the patriotic cake is Donald Trump wants
to build a wall on the American and Mexican border and make Mexico pay for it. Like DUDE! Mexico can barely pay a proper police force, do you really think they care about The Great Wall of Trump???

Great Wall of Trump, high tech simulation.

“They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with [them]. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” (Donald Trump on Mexican Immigrants)

  • Said Senator John McCain wasn’t a war hero because he got captured!
  • “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.”
  • “Laziness is a trait in blacks.”
  • “Remember, new ‘environment friendly’ lightbulbs can cause cancer. Be careful-the idiots who came up with this stuff don’t care.”
  • “Listen you motherf—–s! We’re going to tax you 25 percent!” (Trump to the Chinese).
  • Claiming he could prevent 9/11.

Wow! What a weirdo! I mean this man is the single most obnoxious, racist, narcissistic politician I have ever heard of. He’s a walking train-wreck!  Even his hair is trying to get away from him! If Trump is elected he’ll start a World War…*

*For any American citizens that wish to escape the US once Trump is elected, I hear most of Europe has opened their borders to refugees.
